Last year, Carlos Hank González and his family were under scrutiny from more than one investor and the media when Grupo Financiero Banorte raised its hand in the competition to buy Banamex from Citigroup, something that would have brought them closer to becoming the largest bank in the country, a position currently held by BBVA.

However, this plan did not come to fruition, and after months of being considered by analysts as one of the most viable offers, in October 2022, the firm chaired by Carlos Hank González announced that it was abandoning the process.
